Management

The goals of the Management Program are:

  1. To help students learn the basic fundamentals of business management. That is, the student will learn the basics of what people do in Marketing, Production Management, Accounting, Finance, and other business areas.
  2. To help students decide what kind of career would be rewarding and interesting.
  3. To enable students to discover and focus on the dynamics of management in the context of a challenging and new work environment.
  4. To learn about the responsibilities of a manager, and what this means for future career through many practical examples that are interwoven with core concepts and theories.
  5. To give students all the tools to attain a better understanding of successfully managing others.
  6. To stimulate, encourage, and prepare students for graduate studies and research.
  7. To furnish students with the skills of entry level management positions in commerce.
  8. To have a broad overview of the field of management.
  9. To understand the functions, roles of managers, and the basic skills to be developed.
  10. To learn about making a difference, about pulling together, about getting results and have a good time doing it.

Program Description:

Management is involved with many things. Its focus ranges from understanding entire industries to making and implementing decisions to operating in both local and foreign countries. The program involves an analysis of the functions of management with emphasis on Motivation and Leadership theories. The program describes what management is, why management is important, what managers do, and how managers utilize organizational resources efficiently and effectively to achieve organizational goals. Also, to discuss the principal challenges managers face in today’s increasingly competitive global environment. It provides the theoretical concept of the management process and assists them in the recognition, understanding, and appraisal of the characteristics of a competent manger. The program is the gateway to a wide range of graduate programs, as management is in all spheres of life.

PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT I

This course focuses on the general survey of the functional areas of the organization: Production, Marketing, Human Resource Development and Finance; it also takes into consideration the responsibilities of Board of Directors and introduces students to the types of Business Organizations: Sole Proprietorship, Partnership and Corporation.

PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT II

This course provides the student with an understanding of the theoretical concept of the management process and assists him/her in the recognition, understanding and appraisal of the characteristics of a complete manager. The content of the course includes the history and development of management thoughts, the functions of the manager such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

This course provides a comprehensive analysis of individual and group behavior in organization. It provides an understanding of how an organization can be managed more effectively and enhances the quality of employees’ performance. Topics include individual and group behavior, values and personality; perception and learning in organization; workplace emotions; motivation in the workplace; decision making and creativity; communicating in teams and organizations; leadership in organizational settings; organizational structures and design; and organizational culture and change.

This course introduces management students to various materials and presentation techniques in projecting their ideas to any audience. Some topics of interest are business ethics; time management; customer relationship management; strategy formulation; leadership and women in management.

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS LAW I

This course studies Law as it relates to business operations. Relevant topics to be covered include Law and its sources, the judicial system, litigation and the nature of torts and crimes, methods for resolving conflict, and the principles of law of contracts

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS LAW II

The Principles of Business Law II focuses on the fundamental concepts, principles and rules of law that apply to business transactions.  Topics covered include, sales contracts, the nature and scope of commercial papers, secured transactions, agency as applied to business organizations, and partnership and corporation law.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The focus of this course is to identify what the human resource function is all about. It explores the typical responsibilities of Human Resource departments and how they are affected by the corporate culture, environmental forces and government regulations. Topics include recruitment and selection, Training and development, wages and salaries administration, job evaluation and employee appraisal, human resource function and its relationship to the effective functioning of an organization, Labor laws, and grievance and control negotiations.

MARKETING MANAGEMENT

This course provides an overview of marketing and its importance to society. Some of its basic principles and functional dimensions as well as its role in society are emphasized. It also focuses on the firm’s analysis, planning and control policies and strategies of marketing as it relates to market segmentation and measurement, product development, pricing, promotion and distribution, and marketing environment and product related decisions. Textbook cases and class projects are utilized.

This course deals with a number of related topics, including the goals and functions of financial management, review of accounting, financial analysis financial forecasting, operating and financial leverage, working capital, financial decision, and current asset management.  It also provides an understanding of the types and sources of long term capital, capital budgeting, and cost of capital and financial structure.

MARKETING RESEARCH

This course provides an overview of the marketing research process and methods, the use of marketing research in industry, methods and procedures in conducting marketing survey, and statistical techniques for improving the accuracy in sample survey. It also analyzes specific marketing research problems, including class research problems, presentation of research results, and evaluation of the effectiveness of marketing research.

INVESTMENT AND PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS

This course examines the theoretical basis and practical approach to managing investment portfolios of financial assets. Topics to be covered include: sources of funds and demand for investment capital; operations of security market; determination of investment policy and procedures for analysis of securities; basic information and infrastructure description; investment objectives and constraints of the different  groups of investors; IPS Construction; risk, return and classic portfolio composition; portfolio management; role of economic forecasting; fixed income portfolio management; and equity portfolio management

ADVERTISING AND SALES PROMOTION

This course focuses on the organizing and controlling of advertising and sales promotion within the firm. It examines concepts and theories from behavioral sciences useful for the understanding and prediction of the market place and demand analysis. This elective course is intended for students who want to increase their familiarity with the practical applications of financial management. Selected topics include international financial management, exchange rates and the international monetary system, analysis of potential foreign investment, management of foreign assets, leasing, sales and lease-back, effects of leasing on firm’s balance sheet, evaluating lease proposal factors that affect leasing decisions and leverage lease; warranties, convertibles and options, liquidation and re-organization, small business financing, and money and banking.

RETAIL MANAGEMENT

This course introduces students to retailing from a managerial viewpoint. Topics to be covered include understanding the economic importance of retailing and its role in the marketing channel, evidence of the globalization of  retailing, some of the advances in retailing technology, reasons behind the growth of non-store retailing, key factors in the retail marketing environment and how they relate to retail strategy, and important ethical and legal issues facing retailers.

This course introduces students to the project cycle. Topics of interest include project analysis and planning, project implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and the management of on-going industrial and agricultural as well as social project. Emphasis is placed on the application of methodologies and techniques through case study and special classroom projects

Wages and Salaries Administration

This course focuses on the basic principles governing the management of efficient and effective wages and salary administration. It examines the framework of wages and salary administration, the fundamentals of job and employees’ evaluation, the basic employees and plans of compensating managerial and non-managerial employees, and the administrative control of wages and salaries.

INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT

This course deals with the principles of insurance. It includes: an analysis of risk and strategies to eliminate, minimize or transfer risk; the nature of risk and the methods of risk assumption; management of risk within the organization, the basic elements designed to reduce existing risks; establishment of framework within which future risk and uncertainties can be analyzed and managed; survey of property casualty, life, health and security; the structure of the insurance industry; and public regulation.

LABOR ECONOMICS

This is an advanced elective course in management that applies the analytical tools from intermediate microeconomic theory to analyze how society develops, allocates, and rewards human resources. Topics include: the nature of labor economics; labor force characteristics; labor market models; institutional force in the labor market; internal labor market; the demand for labor; labor supply; labor mobility; structure of the labor movement; the Liberian Labor Union; theories and explanations of labor policy; structure and strategy in collective bargaining; strike and arbitration in private sector; collective bargaining in the public sector; wage determination and wage structure; and the economics of trade union.

BUSINESS POLICY AND STRATEGY

This course gives an overview of strategies engaged by management in decision-making and policy-making. Its focus is on financial and ratio analysis, utilizing balance sheets and income statement of the business concerned, and providing clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses. Exhibits and contingency plans are integral parts of the analysis. The analysis of new business, existing ones, and mergers and acquisitions are highly featured.

This course covers the concepts and develops skills in purchasing and material supply.  It focuses on management functions and builds the skills and concepts necessary to become a successful manager. SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Manpower Planning & Development

This course focuses on the planning and development of the manpower of an organization. It involves assessing manpower needs at national and corporate levels, causes and methods of recruitment, building training progress, and measuring the effectiveness of training programs. It discusses the application of modern theories of motivation to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of employees. Emphasis is placed on the development of managerial employees.
